Understanding the UK Grading System: From Firsts to 2:1s

The Basics

Unlike the GPA system used in the US, UK universities use a classification system for degrees. Understanding this is crucial for setting your academic goals.

First-Class Honours (1st)

Usually 70% and above. This represents excellent work that shows deep understanding, originality, and critical analysis.

Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1)

Usually 60-69%. This is a good grade and often the minimum requirement for many graduate schemes and master's programs.

Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2)

Usually 50-59%. Indicates a sound understanding but with some weaknesses in analysis or structure.

Third-Class Honours (3rd)

Usually 40-49%. A pass, but suggests limited understanding.

How to Aim Higher

To move from a 2:1 to a First, focus on critical evaluation and original thought rather than just recalling facts.
