Undergraduate

  • BA (Bachelor of Arts): Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • BSc (Bachelor of Science): Scientific and technical subjects.
  • LLB (Bachelor of Laws): Qualifying law degree.
  • Honours (Hons): Means you completed the full 360 credits, including a dissertation. Without it, it's an 'Ordinary' degree.

Postgraduate

  • MA/MSc: Taught Master's degrees (usually 1 year).
  • MRes: Master of Research (preparation for a PhD).
  • MPhil: A mini-PhD, often a stepping stone.
  • PhD: Doctor of Philosophy. Pure research (3-4 years).

Why it Matters

Knowing the difference helps you choose the right path for your career. For example, an accredited BSc Psychology is needed to become a Chartered Psychologist.
