Structuring a First-Class Argument

The Golden Thread

Imagine a 'golden thread' running through your essay. Every paragraph should connect to this thread, which is your central thesis. If a paragraph doesn't help answer the question, cut it.

The PEEL Technique

Use PEEL to structure your paragraphs:

  • P - Point: The topic sentence. What is this paragraph about?
  • E - Evidence: Support your point with references, data, or quotes.
  • E - Explanation: Analyze the evidence. Why does it matter? How does it support your point?
  • L - Link: Connect back to the essay question or forward to the next paragraph.

Use transition words to guide your reader. Words like 'However', 'Furthermore', 'Conversely', and 'Consequently' show the relationship between your ideas.
